Take the piece out of wear
If you notice movement, rattling or a prong catching on fabric, stop wearing the piece. Put it in a closed container so a stone cannot disappear if it comes free. Avoid testing the setting repeatedly with your fingers or tools.
Arrange an inspection before cleaning
A loose stone should be assessed before ultrasonic cleaning or vigorous brushing. The setting may need more than tightening if the prongs are thin, cracked or worn away. Mention any impact or earlier repair.
Understand the proposed work
Ask whether the quote covers tightening, rebuilding prongs or replacing part of the setting. If a stone is already missing, confirm the replacement’s material, dimensions and appearance before approving it.
